Tags are revolutionizing the way things are organized on the net. Tags are simply keywords that can be used to find what is needed. Sites like www.flickr.com and www.youtube.com are huge on tags.
Tags are used for general organization. If for example one does a search on "butterflies" on flickr and finds a picture of a few butterflies flying around flowers. There are tags on the picture which could include of course "butterflies". Other tags on the photo can include "flowers" or specific names of the flowers on the picture like "tulips" or "roses". Clicking on the tags bring up other photos that are on the same tag. Which may be more pictures of butterflies and flowers depending on which tag was clicked.
Tags can be used to organize material for personal reference. If for example I see many different videos on youtube and I want to organize it all, I can easily tag them all with a distinctive username like AGueva909. That way those videos are personal to me because it would be uncommon for someone to tag some other video as "AGueva909".
Sites have a section which shows the most popular tags. Which is similar to popular searches.

The ones that are in bigger font and bolder are the most popular.
