Usage of Tags

Tags are revolutionizing the way things are organized on the net. Tags are simply keywords that can be used to find what is needed. Sites like www.flickr.com and www.youtube.com are huge on tags.

Tags are used for general organization. If for example one does a search on "butterflies" on flickr and finds a picture of a few butterflies flying around flowers. There are tags on the picture which could include of course "butterflies". Other tags on the photo can include "flowers" or specific names of the flowers on the picture like "tulips" or "roses". Clicking on the tags bring up other photos that are on the same tag. Which may be more pictures of butterflies and flowers depending on which tag was clicked.

Tags can be used to organize material for personal reference. If for example I see many different videos on youtube and I want to organize it all, I can easily tag them all with a distinctive username like AGueva909. That way those videos are personal to me because it would be uncommon for someone to tag some other video as "AGueva909".

Sites have a section which shows the most popular tags. Which is similar to popular searches.

The ones that are in bigger font and bolder are the most popular.

Challenger Disaster

So we have established that bad communication played a part in the Challenger Disaster. It was the engineers who couldn't communicate with NASA good enough to be able to delay the launch because the O-rings were not effective with the cold weather. NASA just could not relate to their concerns because they were pressured to schedule launches to satisfy the media and the public.

Believe it or not, I just heard about this tragedy yesterday when I was doing the English assignment for it. This whole thing really made me think and it all happened two years before I was born. I was so interested on this subject I did some research. Apparently there are some myths concerning the disaster. Technically the shuttle did not really explode. Few people actually saw it on TV and investigators actually discovered that the crew did not die instantly in 73 sec.

I'd recommend reading this. It was a good read

Ideas for Technology in Education

There are a ton of ways technology can be used to enhance education! I would have to say one way is to destroy ALL overhead projectors and use PowerPoint. I think PowerPoint is a really great tool because it is much easier to see and no one has to try to decipher horrible handwriting.

Video games would also be a great way to enhance learning. Believe it or not my research topic for the last semester was for good uses of video games. I talked about how much parents criticize video games because they supposedly dumb down their children but in actuality they can make them more intelligent. Video games require a lot of thinking sometimes. When gamers play together they really use strategic ways to advance in games. Leadership skills are attained in playing together. Some games incorporate problem solving, riddles and tricky puzzles that require a lot of thinking to solve. All in all video games produce better thinking because they are using their mind more often. I think that kind of state of mind is needed for education and of course there are educational games that are very informative and useful in the classroom because it gives students a visual to learn from.

As you can see by my title. Time flies or does it? Does time fly or are there not enough hours in a day to get things done? Haha. Well I'm doing this for my online english class so I'll be using this for assignments and to talk about where I am at in my english assignments for the week.

We're having this virtual class meeting on Second Life on Sunday so I'm really looking forward to that. It's not mandatory and I get 10 extra points just for showing up!
